The Play the Opening puzzle challenges you to play through a line from your repertoire when given only the opening name. Your goal is to recall the moves accurately and follow the line as you’ve learned it — a practical way to test memory of named openings and reinforce your repertoire through active recall.

This puzzle helps you to:

  • + Test true understanding of your repertoire (not just memorization).
  • + Strengthen recall by linking opening names to the exact move order.

You can choose how many moves to play and which colour to play from; this determines which of your repertoires (White/Black) the line is sourced from. Click New Game to generate a fresh challenge, then enter your moves directly on the chessboard.

As you play, you’ll see the opening name alongside your current guess. After completing the line, click Guess to check your attempt:

  • Green — the right move in the right position.
  • Orange — a move from the line, but in the wrong position.

You have up to 6 attempts to complete the full line. Use the controls to manage your run:

  • Clear: Reset the board and your current guess.
  • Autocomplete: Fill the line with the correct sequence (useful for quick review).

When finished, use the button to open the current position in your Repertoire Builder for deeper study and context.
