Frequently Asked Questions

From Repertoire Builder

The Chessboard Magic Repertoire Builder FAQ provides quick answers to the most common questions about the platform — from getting started to understanding specific features. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, feel free to reach out on our Contact Page or join the community on Discord Server .

  • + Is the platform really free?
Yes, the Repertoire Builder is completely free and will always remain so. However, free accounts have limits in place to ensure fair usage — up to 2,000 total moves, 100 repertoires, 200 library items, and 500 reference tree items. You can upgrade your account to increase these limits and unlock additional features.
  • + Is my repertoire safe?
Yes, your repertoires are stored securely and protected by modern authentication tokens, so only logged-in users can access their own data. The database is backed up daily to prevent data loss and ensure your work is never lost accidentally. However, please note that repertoires are not encrypted — full encryption would significantly impact platform performance. This means that while no one else can access your account, system administrators can technically view stored data if required for maintenance or support.
  • + Can I export my data?
Yes, you have full control over your data and can export it at any time. If you decide to use another platform, it’s easy to export your repertoires and library items as PGN files, ensuring your work remains portable and fully yours.
  • + What happens if I cancel my subscription?
If you cancel your subscription, your account will revert to the free plan. You’ll keep all your existing repertoires, library items, and data — nothing will be deleted. However, you won’t be able to add new content until you fall below the free account quota.
  • + How do I create an account?
You can create an account by visiting our Login Page. You can sign up using your email address — just confirm it by clicking the activation link sent to your inbox — or sign in instantly with your Google account. Once logged in, your data will automatically stay linked to your profile.
  • + Can I delete my account and all data?
Yes. You can delete your data manually, or request full account deletion by contacting us on Discord or messaging @HollowLeaf. This process isn’t automated to make sure each request is verified for security reasons — your privacy and account safety always come first.
  • + Can I use Chessboard Magic offline?
No — Chessboard Magic requires a live internet connection. All actions are saved instantly to the database, ensuring your progress is always up to date and securely stored.
  • + Can I import my existing PGN files or Lichess studies?
Yes — you can import your repertoires by pasting a PGN, uploading a PGN file, or importing directly from a public Lichess Study. Private studies are not supported for security reasons.
  • + Can I share my repertoire with other users?
Not yet — sharing and co-editing repertoires is planned for 2026. We love the idea of collaborative study, but we also want to prevent copyrighted or professional repertoires from being uploaded and shared without permission. Once available, sharing will be carefully designed to protect content and creators.
  • + What’s the difference between a Repertoire and a Library item?
Your Repertoire is where you store your opening lines — for example, the King’s Indian Attack or the Caro-Kann. The Library is for storing individual games, analyses, or positions for deeper study. You can even merge Library items into your Repertoire to expand your opening knowledge.
  • + What browsers are supported?
Chessboard Magic works best on modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. For the best performance, keep your browser up to date and enable JavaScript and cookies.
  • + How can I support the project?
The best way to support Chessboard Magic is to share it with other chess players! Every recommendation, review, or mention helps the community grow and keeps the platform alive for everyone.
  • + Can I contribute to development or translations?
Not at the moment — Chessboard Magic is currently a closed-source passion project. However, if you have ideas or feature suggestions, you can share them anytime on our Discord Server.
  • + Is there a mobile application?
There isn’t a dedicated mobile app yet, but the website is fully mobile-responsive. Desktop is ideal for building and editing repertoires, while mobile is perfect for reviewing and practicing on the go. You can still edit on mobile, but the smaller screen makes larger changes more challenging.
