The Position Trainer challenges you to recall and play the correct next move from your repertoire. It’s a focused and practical way to strengthen your memory, improve recall accuracy, and ensure you know your lines by heart before facing them over the board.
By training regularly, you’ll develop faster recall and deeper familiarity with your repertoire — allowing you to spend less time thinking during games and more time understanding the position itself.
- + Strengthen memory and recall through active repetition and immediate feedback
- + Reinforce key positions from your repertoire with instant correction after each move
- + Build fluency and confidence for practical play — so your moves flow naturally in real games
To get started, simply select the repertoire you want to train, choose whether to play as White or Black, and set the From and To ply range to control the depth of training. This lets you target specific phases — from early openings to deeper branches of your repertoire.
You can then choose between two training modes:
- ◦ Train: Tests you on a single position. You’ll make your move, receive immediate feedback, and then see the correct continuation from your repertoire. Perfect for targeted review of specific positions or problem areas.
- ◦ Autoplay: Continuously serves you new positions one after another, creating a dynamic recall loop that turns your repertoire into an ongoing puzzle session.
After each attempt, the correct move or full line is displayed so you can review and reinforce memory immediately. This instant feedback loop helps identify which positions are well-learned and which still require more attention.
Below the board, the Moves Card provides additional insights and visualization tools to enhance your study experience. In the top-right corner of the Moves Card, you’ll find a menu allowing you to:
- ◦ Switch between different move display formats — including the move tree structure, which visually highlights your training results so you can see where you’re performing well and where you’re struggling
- ◦ Highlight moves based on engine evaluations (if analysis has been run on the Builder page for the same repertoire)
- ◦ Toggle on or off comments, annotations, and engine evaluations for a cleaner or more detailed view, depending on your focus
By combining visual feedback with performance tracking, the Position Trainer helps you pinpoint specific move sequences that need review — transforming memorization into a more interactive, data-driven learning process.
Personal Note: I often use Position Trainer as a warm-up before studying or playing online. It quickly reveals which positions I remember perfectly and which ones need a quick refresh — and the highlighted move tree makes those weak points impossible to miss.
