Solitaire

From Repertoire Builder

Location: Trainer > Solitaire

The Solitaire Trainer allows you to practice chess by playing through games entirely on your own. You can load any game — from our master-game library, your personal saved games, or by importing your own PGN — and step through the moves as if you were the original player. As you play, you will receive immediate feedback on each move, and at the end of the session you’ll receive a full review to help you understand your decisions, identify mistakes, and reinforce stronger patterns. This helps you strengthen your pattern recognition, reinforce opening and middlegame principles, and deepen your understanding of how strong games unfold move by move.

This allows you to:

  • + Practice replaying games with complete focus and without external assistance
  • + Load games from multiple sources — master games, your own library, or imported PGNs
  • + Strengthen your intuition by exploring how moves connect across the full game
  • + Receive move-by-move feedback and a complete review at the end of the session

Controls

The Controls section allows you to set up your Solitaire training session. You can choose how to load a game, configure your playing parameters, and define how the trainer evaluates your moves.

You have several options for selecting a game:

  • Load PGN: Paste or upload any PGN to play through your own games or external study material
  • Select Game: Choose from our curated libraries such as Bobby Fischer’s 60 Memorable Games, the Zurich 1953 Candidates, and many others. Your progress against our collections is also tracked
  • Random Game: Load a random game from our extensive library for spontaneous practice
  • Library: Search for and select a game from your personal saved library

You can also configure how the training behaves:

  • Set how many attempts you have for each move
  • Choose whether you are playing as White, Black, or Both

Once the game has started, try to play the correct move directly on the chessboard. If you are unsure how to proceed, you may click Skip to skip the current move, or click Hint to highlight the piece that should be moved. You can replay the game at any time to measure improvement or explore alternative ideas. These options provide additional guidance while still allowing you to continue the training session at your own pace.

You may click End at any moment to stop and view your review.

In Game Feedback

During play, the Solitaire Trainer provides real time feedback through two cards that appear alongside the board. These cards help you understand the quality of your decisions as you progress through the game.

  • PGN Card: Displays the game’s move list. A red superscript appears next to any move where you made incorrect attempts, showing exactly how many mistakes occurred before you found the correct move
  • Moves Card: Shows the engine evaluation for the move you just played, allowing you to see how your move compares to the original game continuation. This card can be disabled if you prefer not to see evaluations during play

This real time feedback reinforces accuracy, highlights mistakes instantly, and helps you understand how each decision impacts the position.

Note: Interestingly, your chosen move may sometimes be stronger than the move played in the original game. It can be surprising and thought provoking to consider whether, in that moment, you found an improvement over a grandmaster’s choice.

Post Game Review

Once you complete the game or choose to end it early, the Solitaire Trainer presents a detailed review of your performance. This review is displayed through two cards that help you understand how accurately you followed the original game and where your decisions differed.

The first card provides your key results:

  • Matched Moves: Moves you correctly identified within the allowed number of attempts
  • Unmatched Moves: Moves you were unable to guess correctly within the number of attempts
  • Skipped Moves: Moves where you clicked Skip instead of guessing
  • Not Attempted: Moves not reached because the game was ended early

A second section provides a breakdown of all Unmatched Moves. This shows additional detail about what you played instead of the correct move. For example, you may have missed the actual move but chosen a book move, a strong move, or even a blunder. These insights help you understand the nature of the mistakes and where your intuition differed from the original game.

Finally, the Moves Card gives you a complete PGN view of the entire game and a set of navigation controls:

  • Reset: Return to the starting position
  • Back: Move back one move
  • Next: Advance one move
  • Flip Board: Flip the orientation of the board
  • Previous Key Move: Jump to the previous move where you did not guess correctly
  • Next Key Move: Jump to the next move where you did not guess correctly

You can also navigate the game using the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard. At the bottom of the Moves Card, you may toggle the display of full variations at points where inaccuracies or worse occurred, giving you deeper insight into alternative lines. You can also copy the PGN or download it directly for later study or external analysis.
