1. Introduction
Welcome to the Chessboard Magic Repertoire Builder. By accessing or using this Service, you agree to these Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. These Terms explain your rights and responsibilities when using the platform and describe how we handle your personal data in compliance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR).
2. Definitions
- Service – The Chessboard Magic Repertoire Builder web application and its associated features and integrations.
- User – Anyone who accesses or uses the Service.
- Content – Any data, games, or materials you upload, import, or create.
- We / Us / Our – Chessboard Magic, its operators, and lawful successors.
3. Fair Use and Prohibited Activities
Chessboard Magic is designed for fair and responsible use. You must not misuse the Service or engage in activities that could harm users, disrupt systems, or violate applicable laws.
Prohibited actions include:
- Uploading or distributing malicious code, viruses, or harmful scripts
- Automating requests, scraping data, or attempting unauthorized access
- Engaging in spam, harassment, or abusive conduct
- Using the Service in a manner that interferes with its operation or places excessive load on our infrastructure
Accounts found in violation may be restricted or terminated. We may also remove content that infringes copyright or violates community standards.
4. User Content and Intellectual Property Rights
You retain ownership of your chess data, games, and repertoires. By using the Service, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive license to securely store, back up, and process your content as needed to operate and improve the Service.
You must not upload or share copyrighted materials without permission. Upon receiving valid notice, we will remove infringing content under UK copyright law.
The Service’s design, source code, and branding are the exclusive property of Chessboard Magic and are protected by intellectual property law. Users may not copy, modify, or reverse-engineer the Service.
5. Subscription Plans and Billing
Chessboard Magic offers free and paid memberships managed through Patreon. Paid plans may include additional storage, analysis tools, or advanced features.
- Payments are processed entirely by Patreon under their Terms of Service.
- We do not store or handle your payment details.
- Memberships renew automatically unless cancelled through Patreon.
- No prorated refunds are provided.
- Free accounts may have access or usage limitations.
6. Information Collection and Use
We use Google Analytics to collect anonymized technical data that helps us improve the platform. This may include device type, operating system, usage patterns, and partially masked IP addresses. Some of this information may qualify as personal data under UK GDPR.
- Analytics data is retained for up to 26 months.
- User-generated content (repertoires, games, etc.) is retained until deleted by the user or the account is terminated.
Cookies and Tracking
Google Analytics uses cookies and similar technologies to measure usage. You can control cookies via your browser settings. By using the Service, you consent to analytics cookies as described.
Users may opt out via the Google Analytics Opt-Out tool.
International Data Transfers
Data may be stored or processed by third-party services such as Google, including servers outside the UK/EU. We use legally approved safeguards (such as Standard Contractual Clauses) to ensure adequate protection.
7. Your Data Rights (UK GDPR)
Under the UK GDPR, you have the right to:

- Object to processing or withdraw consent

The Service is provided “as is,” without warranties of accuracy, availability, or fitness for purpose. To the fullest extent allowed by law, our liability is limited to direct damages not exceeding the total fees paid by you in the prior 12 months.
We are not responsible for delays or failures caused by events beyond our control (Force Majeure), or for the actions of third-party services (Patreon, Google Analytics, external chess databases, etc.).
9. Children’s Privacy
Chessboard Magic is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect or process data from minors. Parents or guardians may contact us to review, correct, or request deletion of a child's data.
10. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms and our Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via in-app notice or email (if applicable). Revised Terms take effect upon posting unless otherwise stated.
11. Termination and Data Retention
You may stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms or pose security risks.
Upon termination:
- Personal data will be deleted or anonymized within 90 days
- Some data may be retained if required by law or for legitimate business reasons (e.g., backups)
12. Governing Law and Dispute Resolution

If unresolved, disputes fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales. International users may have additional rights under local law.
13. Entire Agreement and Severability
These Terms and our Privacy Policy form the entire agreement between you and Chessboard Magic. If any part is found invalid, the remaining provisions remain in effect.
